Sanctions 360: Sanctions relevant when dealing with Somalia

With this presentation we expand the geographical coverage of our series, Sanctions 360°, to Somalia.

Somalia slipped from managing a successful democratic transition in 60s to a more than 35 years’ power vacuum and related humanitarian crises. International economic sanctions which are in place for the same period aim to contribute to the restoration of statehood and alleviating sufferings of the people. In addition, Somalia’s geography makes it critical for international trade and addressing global problems of, for example, fight against terrorism. Accordingly, understanding local sanctions’ regimes is of relevance both for corporates and NGOs operating in the region.
