Sanctions 360: Sanctions relevant for trade with Mali, Niger, and the Central African Republic

In this video of our series, Sanctions 360°, we discuss the targeted economic sanctions which are relevant for dealing with Mali, Niger, and the Central African Republic (the “CAR“).

These are, largely, political sanctions, namely they impose travel bans and asset freezes on either the leaders of military regimes which overthrew the civil governments or the leaders of militia. With respect to the CAR the sanctions also include a targeted arms’ embargo. This makes these sanctions’ regimes similar and worth discussing in a single video.

However, a more important reason for discussing these three countries together are very similar route causes for the political triggers which resulted in recent military conflicts, namely the overthrow of Qaddafi regime in Libya, the resulting civil war, and the spill-over effects on Mali, Niger, and the CAR. It is a sad irony that what started as a democratic up-rising, resulted in civil wars, military coups, spread of radical groups, and now the sanctions.

Finally, we take this as an opportunity to raise the importance of regional sanctions which are administered by regional organisations, like ECOWAS sanctions against Niger.
