In this video of our series Sanctions 360° we will look in one of recent developments in US sanctions law, namely coming into effect of the US tariffs on US trade with India. These tariffs were introduced as a part of US sanctions programme against Russia. Their stated purpose is to stop India purchasing Russian crude. Various commentators have discussed the economic and geopolitical aspects of this measure. It is also of interest for us as an example of “secondary” sanctions imposed against a state with no connection to the Russia/Ukraine war. It also raises interesting discrete legal issues of the validity of such actions of the US President as well as their overall consistency with what is known as Oil Price Cap targeted economic sanctions against trade in Russian crude and oil products. Thank you for watching!
