Sanctions 360: Sanctions and trade in Russian natural gas

With this presentation we continue our series Sanctions 360° by looking into how sanctions affect another critical sector of world economy – trade in Russian natural gas. We look into both aspects of this trade – natural gas transported by pipelines and trade in LNG. We look into complex political and economic choices which various jurisdictions have to make and how such choices shape their sanctions programmes.

On 23 October 2025, EU introduced a gradual prohibition (which effective date depends on whether a contract is short or long term and a few other factors) for import of Russian LNG as a part of its 19th package of sanctions against Russia. For further information on this measure as well as 19th package of sanctions itself, please see our video.
